President confirms urgent compensation payments for farmers

Date:

Immediate livestock compensation payments in Cyprus will be made to farmers affected by foot-and-mouth disease, President Nikos Christodoulides has confirmed.

Speaking to reporters on Friday during a visit to the “Makarios III” Technical and Vocational Education and Training School in Nicosia, the President said the government is in daily consultations over the crisis and stressed that support measures will be implemented without delay.

Continuous dialogue with livestock sector

Christodoulides said the government has maintained constant contact with livestock organisations since the beginning of the crisis, adding that decisions announced recently were the result of structured dialogue with farmers’ groups.

He also stressed that the management of the situation requires broad cooperation, describing it as a major challenge that must be addressed collectively.

Referring to financial support, the President confirmed that livestock compensation payments in Cyprus will begin immediately, ensuring that no affected farmer is left out of the support scheme.

He added that the government’s fiscal stability allows it to absorb such crises while continuing to support the primary sector.

Call for cooperation and stability

Christodoulides welcomed the decision by farmers to suspend protest measures, noting that while demonstrations are legitimate, they should not disrupt public life.

He reiterated that the state is actively managing the crisis through continuous coordination and repeated meetings with stakeholders.

Foot-and-mouth disease response ongoing

The government is handling the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease through coordinated veterinary and agricultural measures, alongside compensation planning and recovery strategies.

The President said efforts will continue until the situation is fully stabilised, with all relevant ministries involved in the response.

Authorities say discussions will continue on a daily basis, with further measures expected as part of the broader response to safeguard the livestock sector and ensure stability in rural communities.
