National Guard and police investigating discovery
The National Guard and police have been on alert since Wednesday after an unexploded shell was discovered during efforts to extinguish a wildfire in a forested area near Agia Anna.
According to information, the 80mm unexploded shell was found outside the Kalo Chorio firing range.
National Guard personnel secured the area as a safety precaution following the discovery.
An operation to remove the shell had been scheduled for 07:30 on Thursday but has yet to take place.
Shell discovered during firefighting operation
The wildfire was detected at around 15:00 on Wednesday by a Forestry Department fire lookout.
Ground crews from the Forestry Department and Fire Service were mobilised, while firefighting aircraft were also deployed.
Five firefighting aircraft took part in the operation, alongside 33 Forestry Department personnel with six fire engines, two water tankers and a bulldozer.
Nine Fire Service personnel with three fire engines were also deployed.
The Larnaca District Administration provided an additional water tanker and bulldozer, while local residents assisted with an agricultural tractor and excavator.
Six hectares burned
The fire was brought under control at around 17:30.
Approximately six hectares of reeds, dry vegetation and wild vegetation were destroyed.
Authorities are continuing their work following the discovery of the unexploded shell outside the firing range.
