Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has sent a clear message to Ankara, saying Turkish reactions will not affect Greece’s planning over special spatial planning frameworks for renewable energy and tourism.
Speaking at a Cabinet meeting, Mitsotakis stressed that issues concerning Greek sovereignty are based on international law.
“Reactions from the east following our actions do not affect our planning. Areas under Greek sovereignty derive from international law and we are ready to defend them at any time,” he said.
Greece sets limits for dialogue
Mitsotakis also reiterated Greece’s intention to maintain good relations with neighbouring countries, while setting out the framework for dialogue with Turkey.
“We want good relations with our neighbours. However, we are not discussing anything beyond the delimitation of the continental shelf and exclusive economic zones in the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean,” the Greek Prime Minister said.
The comments came after Turkish reactions to Greece’s special spatial planning frameworks covering renewable energy sources and tourism.
Message to Ankara
Mitsotakis’ remarks underline Athens’ position that its planning and decisions concerning areas under Greek sovereignty will continue regardless of Turkish objections, while dialogue with Ankara will remain focused on maritime delimitation issues.
