Cristiano Ronaldo confirms he has played his last World Cup game

Date:

Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that he played his final World Cup match after Portugal were eliminated by Spain, but the 41-year-old forward said he has not yet decided what comes next in his career.

Portugal captain Ronaldo’s 233rd appearance for his country ended in disappointment as Spain secured a late 1-0 victory in Dallas, ending Portugal’s campaign.

The defeat marked the end of Ronaldo’s record sixth World Cup appearance. He remains the only player to have scored in six editions of the tournament.

Despite the result, Ronaldo said he leaves the competition with a clear conscience after giving everything for Portugal.

“I am sad to leave like this but I have given everything, always given my best,” Ronaldo said. “I go with a clear conscience.”

Portugal legend delays future decision

Ronaldo confirmed that the match was his final World Cup appearance but said he would not make immediate decisions about his future.

“I will not make decisions in the heat of the moment,” he said, adding that he would take time to be with his family before deciding his next steps.

The forward highlighted Portugal’s European Championship triumph in 2016 as one of the greatest achievements of his career, saying the title had the same importance for him as a World Cup victory.

He also pointed to Portugal’s success during his era, saying the team achieved the most successful period in the country’s football history.

Martínez praises Ronaldo’s influence

Portugal manager Roberto Martínez praised Ronaldo’s leadership and impact, despite the forward failing to score against Spain.

“He has been an exemplary captain,” Martínez said, describing Ronaldo as a football icon and a role model.

Martínez defended his decision not to substitute Ronaldo during the match, saying his experience and ability in attacking situations remained important.

The defeat was also Martínez’s final match as Portugal manager. He said he was proud of the team’s performance and their ability to compete against one of the tournament favourites.

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente praised substitute Mikel Merino, whose late goal secured victory and sent Portugal out of the competition.
