Rizoelia farmers protest sparks police dispute

Date:

Document challenges police narrative

A protest by livestock farmers at Rizoelia has triggered controversy after a document emerged contradicting the police’s claims that their operation was successful.

Police had stated that their handling of the protest- which caused widespread traffic disruption across Cyprus and even led to the temporary immobilisation of President Nikos Christodoulides- was effective.

However, new evidence suggests that not only was the operation unsuccessful, but previously agreed measures were not followed.

Pre-protest letter outlined strict conditions

A letter dated April 22, just one day before the protest, shows that the police director had set clear conditions citing road safety concerns.

The document explicitly stated that:

  • Road closures or blockages were not permitted
  • Parking or abandoning unattended vehicles on motorway lanes was prohibited

These terms were meant to ensure that traffic flow would not be significantly disrupted.

Agreements allegedly breached

Despite these conditions, events on the day appear to contradict the agreed framework.

Farmers gathered at the Kosmyria reception venue at 11:00 and were escorted by police to the Rizoelia roundabout by 11:30. While the agreement allowed for a possible “symbolic” disruption, participants proceeded to block lanes almost immediately.

Vehicles were placed on the lower lane of the motorway towards Ayia Napa, completely halting traffic. Additional blockages were also set up around the Rizoelia roundabout.

President among those affected

Hours later, as President Christodoulides was travelling towards Ayia Napa for a leaders’ dinner linked to an informal council, all exits were reportedly closed.

This resulted in total gridlock on the motorway and left the president himself stranded in traffic, with reports indicating he expressed clear frustration over the situation.

Government response and investigation

The developments have also drawn the attention of Justice Minister Marios Hartsiotis, who convened a meeting to assess the measures taken during both the informal council and the police operation at Rizoelia.

The minister has requested a full report on the incident. However, the police headquarters has reportedly denied that such a report has been formally requested.
