A yellow thunderstorm warning has been issued by the Department of Meteorology, with severe storms expected to affect parts of the island on Tuesday afternoon.
The warning will be in force from 1pm until 6pm, with isolated strong thunderstorms forecast over mountainous and inland areas, and possibly along the eastern coast.
Rainfall could exceed 35mm per hour
Hail is possible during thunderstorms, while rainfall intensity is expected to locally exceed 35 millimetres per hour.
The weather will initially be mostly clear on Tuesday, before increased cloud develops around midday and during the early afternoon, bringing localised rain and isolated thunderstorms, mainly over the mountains and inland areas.
Winds will initially be light and variable at 3 Beaufort, gradually becoming mainly south-westerly to north-westerly, light to moderate at 3 to 4 Beaufort.
During the afternoon, winds could strengthen to 5 Beaufort along windward coastal areas and during thunderstorms.
The sea will be slight, while temperatures will rise to around 34°C inland, 30°C along the western and south-western coasts, 32°C along the remaining coasts and 25°C in the higher mountains.
Mostly clear conditions overnight
Tonight will be mostly clear, although increased local cloud is expected across the western half of the island.
Winds will blow mainly from the west to north-west, remaining light and initially reaching moderate levels locally at 3 to 4 Beaufort.
The sea will remain slight.
Temperatures will fall to around 22°C inland, 23°C along the coast and 16°C in the higher mountains.
More showers possible on Wednesday
Wednesday will be mostly clear, but cloud developing around midday and during the afternoon is expected to bring isolated rain or a thunderstorm over the mountains and inland areas.
Thursday and Friday are forecast to remain mostly clear.
Temperatures are not expected to change significantly on Wednesday. However, a noticeable rise is forecast through Friday, when temperatures are expected to climb above seasonal averages.
