The United States has reaffirmed its support for energy security and cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean, following bipartisan congressional intervention over the Great Sea Interconnector.
“The United States supports energy security and cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean, including through the Eastern Mediterranean Energy Centre,” a State Department spokesperson told the Athens-Macedonian News Agency.
“The Trump administration remains committed to strengthening key energy partnerships that enhance global energy security and promote a safer and more prosperous future, with energy security for the United States and its partners,” the spokesperson added.
Bipartisan push for the project
The statement follows a letter from a bipartisan group of members of Congress to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the head of the US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC).
The lawmakers called on the Trump administration to prioritise the electricity interconnection between Greece, Cyprus and Israel.
The Great Sea Interconnector is being linked by US lawmakers to the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) and broader US strategic interests in the region.
Meridiam joins project
The State Department statement follows an agreement signed on August 5 for French investment group Meridiam to become the majority shareholder in the company established to implement and finance the project.
The development comes as the Great Sea Interconnector continues to attract political and investment attention over its potential role in regional energy cooperation.
