President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides has reportedly received threatening messages on Friday.
According to information obtained by SigmaLive, the threats are believed to have come from an individual linked to a serious criminal case, which has been under trial for several months. The messages were allegedly transmitted through prison channels, prompting investigations within the correctional facility over the past few days.
The Police, Intelligence Service, and Presidential Guard are currently assessing the situation. For the time being, the government has declined to comment on the matter.
Police remain tight-lipped on the threats
On Monday morning, Police Spokesperson Kyriaki Lamprianidou spoke on the “Protoselido” news programme, confirming the investigation.
“The President himself has confirmed that he received a threat. The police, in cooperation with all relevant authorities, are investigating. We cannot disclose further details at this time,” she stated.
The confirmation follows President Christodoulides’ public acknowledgment on Saturday, when he verified reports about receiving a threatening message.
Prison raid following threats
Reports indicate that after the threatening message was sent by an unidentified individual, authorities conducted a raid at the central prison facility in the early hours of Friday. The operation involved prison guards and a significant number of police officers.
During the search, authorities confiscated a television and a personal notebook from a prison cell, while a mobile phone and charger were discovered in a staff restroom within the facility.
Investigations remain ongoing, with security forces working to determine the source and credibility of the threats.
