First municipality in Cyprus to adopt smart parking
The Municipality of Agia Napa has installed smart parking sensors as part of the national Smart Cyprus project, becoming the first municipality in Cyprus to implement this system.
Real-time parking updates for citizens
According to the municipality, the Smart Cyprus project, coordinated by the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, aims to introduce unified smart solutions across Cyprus, marking a significant step in digital transformation and the modernisation of municipal services.
On Monday, 9 March 2026, MK TTS installed trial vehicle detection sensors at the “Melissi” parking area in Agia Napa. These sensors will record real-time parking occupancy, providing immediate updates to both citizens and municipal services on available spaces.
Smart parking app to improve daily life
Through the Smart Parking application, residents and visitors will receive real-time information on available parking spots and be guided directly to them. The app will also allow payments for parking fees and potential fines, simplifying daily routines for users.
Mayor highlights technological innovation
Mayor Christos Zannetou stated, “This initiative aligns with the municipality’s strategy to leverage technology for the benefit of citizens. Agia Napa continues to lead by adopting modern technological solutions that enhance daily life for residents and visitors.”
He added that the system will allow better management of parking spaces and immediate information for drivers. The municipality plans to gradually expand the system to all municipal parking areas.
Future smart city developments
Zannetou confirmed plans to implement the Smart Cyprus project’s other key components, including smart lighting and smart waste management. The project aims to create a modern, sustainable, and “smart city” model. Funded by the national Recovery and Resilience Plan, “Cyprus of Tomorrow,” Smart Cyprus seeks to improve resource management and citizen services across all municipalities and communities.
