Two wildfires broke out in the Paphos district on Wednesday, with homes threatened near Giolou and firefighting crews also responding to incidents in the Drouseia area.
According to the Fire Service, the first of the Paphos wildfires was reported at 11:27 in dry grass and wild vegetation at the Limnes locality near the community of Giolou.
Four fire engines from Paphos district fire stations responded, while five firefighting aircraft carried out successive water drops.
The fire was brought under control at 12:42 after burning one hectare of dry grass, wild vegetation and a number of trees.
Several isolated private homes were threatened by the flames but were protected by firefighters.
Aircraft deployed near Giolou
The Forestry Department supported the operation with three fire engines and a tracked vehicle, while the Game and Fauna Service, Giolou Community Council and the SupportCY volunteer team also assisted.
A leased bulldozer and a water tanker were also deployed during the operation.
Later, at 15:45, the Fire Service sent two engines from the Polis Chrysochous Fire Station to a fire involving dry grass and wild vegetation at the Tertzia locality near Drouseia.
The crews were deployed to support the Forestry Department in an area under its operational responsibility.
Separate fire brought under control in Drouseia
The Forestry Department also reported a forest fire at the Monastiria locality within the administrative boundaries of Drouseia.
The fire broke out at 19:40 on Wednesday, 16 September, and was brought fully under control at 22:00.
It burned five decares of low wild vegetation.
Eight Forestry Department personnel and two fire engines took part in the operation, assisted by four Fire Service personnel and two fire engines.
The causes of the Paphos wildfires are under investigation.
