Shehbaz Sharif, whose country has been mediating talks between Iran and the United States, announced on X that a final agreement between the two sides aimed at addressing the Middle East crisis could be completed within the next 24 hours. Sharif stated that “we are closer than ever to a peace agreement,” adding that finalisation is expected within the next day, after which Pakistan is preparing for the electronic signing of the accord and technical-level talks next week. He also thanked both Washington and Tehran for their commitment to the negotiations and said he was confident the agreement would provide “a strong foundation for lasting peace.”
Earlier on Saturday, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the agreement could be completed “even this weekend.” Speaking to Fox News, Bessent remarked that “maybe this weekend or by Monday we’ll be on the other side of this issue,” while expressing confidence that a deal would help lower energy prices and ease pressure on American consumers.
The latest developments come as US media continue to highlight the economic costs of the conflict with Iran. Adding to speculation that negotiations are nearing a breakthrough, Donald Trump on Friday reposted a message from Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Truth Social.
In his post, Araghchi said that “the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding has never been closer to completion,” while urging the media to avoid speculation about its contents until it is officially finalised. He added that all details would be made public “in due course” in line with Iran’s commitment to a transparent process.
