FBI to support ongoing probe in Cyprus

An FBI investigation team is expected to arrive in Cyprus in the coming days to assist authorities in the ongoing “Sandy” case, President Nikos Christodoulides announced on Tuesday during a Cabinet meeting.

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation will contribute primarily to the analysis of testimonies and statements as part of efforts to accelerate the investigation process.

US response described as immediate

President Christodoulides said the request was made following communication with the US government, which responded positively without delay.

“The experience will help advance the swift investigation of the case,” he noted, referring to the FBI investigation support.

He also expressed appreciation for the prompt cooperation from US authorities.

Investigation at an advanced stage

According to the President, the investigation is already at a “particularly advanced stage”, with systematic work and continuous evaluation of evidence ongoing.

The Cyprus Police is also working closely with Europol, particularly on specialised forensic analysis carried out under modern European standards.

These international collaborations form a key part of the broader FBI investigation framework now being strengthened.

Strong international cooperation

Authorities stressed that cooperation with Europol continues in parallel, ensuring that forensic processes follow methods that cannot be challenged.

The addition of the FBI team is expected to further enhance technical capacity and speed up analytical work in the case.

President highlights rule of law commitment

President Christodoulides reaffirmed the government’s “zero tolerance” stance on issues affecting the rule of law, stating that institutions must be strengthened through both domestic and international cooperation.

He emphasised that Cyprus, as an EU member state, has a responsibility to safeguard constitutional order and institutional credibility.

“We have a duty to respect the Constitution, the state and its institutions,” he said, linking this commitment to the ongoing investigation support effort.

An FBI team is expected to arrive in Cyprus shortly to begin assisting investigators, particularly in reviewing statements and testimonies gathered during the probe.
