Government briefed on ongoing probe

The Sandy case investigation is once again heading to the Council of Ministers, as authorities continue to examine a high-profile and complex file that has drawn intense public attention.

The Minister of Justice was briefed by the Chief of Police on the progress of the investigation, with officers taking dozens of statements in an effort to piece together the full sequence of events.

Justice Minister Kostas Fytiris said he has received updated information and will brief the Cabinet on Wednesday regarding the next steps in the Sandy case investigation.

Possible appointment of independent investigator

According to officials, the appointment of an independent criminal investigator remains under consideration. However, it has not been ruled out that the probe could continue under the Cyprus Police.

Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis stressed that all procedures will follow established legal frameworks and that a thorough examination of all aspects of the case will take place.

Europol review under way

Attention is also focused on Europol’s involvement in the Sandy case investigation, with the European agency confirming it has received a request for information dated 8 April 2026.

Europol said the request is currently under assessment in line with its regulatory procedures.

Ongoing testimony and new evidence

Investigations continue with police collecting further testimonies in an effort to clarify key aspects of the case.

Former Attorney General Costas Clerides has reportedly confirmed to investigators that he sent an SMS to a former judge, as part of the ongoing inquiry into allegations linked to the case.

The message referred to claims involving a woman and stated that any involvement was of a humanitarian nature, denying knowledge of any alleged facilitation or further involvement.

New findings from investigators

According to reports, investigators have also identified additional material among the evidence submitted by journalist Makarios Drousiotis, including a photograph found online and allegedly taken from a social media profile.

Police later traced the individual in the image, who confirmed its authenticity and provided the original photograph.

Authorities continue to examine all evidence as part of the broader Sandy case investigation, which remains ongoing.
