UN Secretary-General to hold separate talks with Cyprus leaders on Tuesday

Date:

A crucial week for the Cyprus issue begins on Monday with the arrival of UN Secretary-General António Guterres, who is expected to intensify efforts to restart reunification talks before the end of his term.

Guterres is due to arrive in Cyprus on Monday evening from Syria. His Personal Envoy, María Ángela Holguín, who arrived on the island on Saturday, will meet President Nikos Christodoulides at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, while a meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman is also expected.

On Tuesday morning, the UN Secretary-General will hold separate meetings with President Christodoulides and Erhürman, following the Cypriot President’s consultations with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Athens.

Later in the day, Guterres will lay a wreath at the UN Peacekeepers Memorial outside the Ledra Palace Hotel before visiting the Committee on Missing Persons (CMP) laboratory.

He will also meet the two negotiators, the heads of the Technical Committees and representatives of civil society.

On Tuesday evening, Guterres will attend a private dinner with the two leaders at the residence of the UN Special Representative, Colin Stewart, in the UN Protected Area at Nicosia Airport.

On Wednesday morning, the UN chief will hold a joint meeting with both leaders at Nicosia Airport, followed by a press conference.

According to reports, Guterres is expected to seek an updated framework for a Cyprus settlement based on the proposals he presented during the Crans-Montana talks in 2017.
