A convicted inmate serving a prison sentence was arrested in the early hours of Sunday while on authorised prison leave after allegedly being involved in the burglary of a restaurant in Paphos and the theft of approximately €6,000.
According to the Ministry of Justice and Public Order, the suspect is a 56-year-old man who had been granted temporary leave to visit his family in Paphos.
Following his arrest, he was taken into custody and is expected to appear before the Paphos District Court, where police will seek a remand order as investigations continue.
The 56-year-old is currently serving a six-year prison sentence for theft by an employee and money laundering.
Having completed more than half of his sentence, he had been participating in the Guidance, Community Employment and Rehabilitation Centre for Inmates, under which he was granted temporary leave in accordance with prison regulations.
The Ministry said prison authorities have already initiated the necessary procedures regarding both the inmate’s participation in the rehabilitation programme and the conditions of his sentence.
Police investigations are ongoing.
