Squishy toys in Cyprus recalled due to harmful chemicals

Date:

Two squishy toys sold in Cyprus are being withdrawn from the market after laboratory tests detected hazardous chemicals at concentrations exceeding permitted legal limits, according to the Department of Labour Inspection.

The products were among 18 samples of soft toys marketed as “Squishies” and “Dumplings” tested as part of an inspection campaign targeting potentially harmful substances.

Testing follows European safety alerts

The inspection campaign was launched following media reports and notifications through the European Union’s Safety Gate rapid alert system concerning the detection of benzene in similar products.

The samples underwent laboratory analysis to determine their benzene and phthalate content.

The Department of Labour Inspection confirmed that procedures have already begun to withdraw the two non-compliant products from the Cypriot market.

Health concerns over phthalates

Phthalates are chemical substances classified as toxic to reproduction. Their use in toys is subject to restrictions under the EU’s REACH Regulation.

The department urged consumers to exercise particular caution when purchasing squishy toys, noting that different versions, branded products and imitations are available on the market.

These products may differ in their chemical composition and compliance with safety legislation.
