Microplastics found across Cyprus beaches

Date:

The presence of microplastics on Cypriot beaches is neither a new nor a sudden phenomenon, according to the AKTI Centre for Studies and Research, which responded to recent reports describing a “new detection” and emergency meetings on the issue.

AKTI said it has been conducting systematic scientific research on microplastics along Cyprus’ coastline since 2022, carrying out continuous sediment sampling in ten coastal areas alongside laboratory and microscopic analysis.

Widespread findings across all coasts

According to the results of four years of monitoring, microplastics have been detected in all studied coastal areas, regardless of geographical orientation.

Findings include fragments, fibres, films, pellets and foam plastics, in both coloured and transparent forms.

High concentrations recorded

Particular concern has been raised over pollution levels in the most affected area, where up to 6,000 microplastic particles per square metre were recorded on average.

The organisation noted that the results show clear seasonal variations, with higher concentrations mainly observed in December and March.

AKTI said this highlights the key role of sea currents and weather conditions in transporting microplastics.

Call for sustained action

The group stressed that the Mediterranean Sea is among the most vulnerable regions globally when it comes to plastic pollution.

It warned that addressing the issue cannot be limited to isolated interventions when pollution becomes visible, but requires continuous monitoring and scientific documentation.

AKTI also called for stronger prevention policies, including reducing primary plastic production and redesigning packaging systems.
