Customs authorities carried out a cash seizure operation at the Agios Dometios crossing after a large sum of cash and cheques was discovered during a routine inspection of a vehicle driven by an Israeli national.
Customs checks at Green Line crossing
According to an announcement by the Customs Department, the incident took place on 21 May 2026 during standard inspections at the Agios Dometios crossing point, aimed at enforcing Green Line Regulation rules.
Officers selected a rental vehicle for inspection as part of routine controls. The driver, an Israeli national, was subject to a physical search after initial checks raised suspicion.
Cash and cheques discovered in vehicle
During the inspection, authorities identified €29,300 in cash, consisting mainly of €100 and €200 notes, inside the vehicle.
In addition, officers found 39 cheques issued by Israeli banks, with a total value of approximately ILS 1,903,500 (around €569,000).
The operation involved both the physical currency and financial instruments found in the vehicle.
The individual reportedly told officers that the funds did not originate from the occupied areas and admitted he had brought them from Israel. However, he had not declared the amounts upon entry through Larnaca Airport, as required.
Investigation underway
Following the discovery, Customs officers proceeded with the confiscation of both the cash and cheques. The case remains under investigation by the Customs Department’s Investigation Unit.
Authorities continue to examine potential breaches of customs declaration rules as part of the ongoing inquiry into the case.
