Paphos Airport: €200,000 hidden in socks

A Ukrainian national was found carrying €199,950 in cash concealed inside 13 socks placed within shoes upon arrival at Paphos International Airport.

The discovery was made on 24 May 2026 by officers of the Cyprus Customs and Excise Department following intelligence received from the Anti-Narcotics Service (YKAN).

Passenger arrived from Dublin

According to the official announcement, the passenger arrived in Cyprus from Dublin and was selected for inspection after risk assessment and baggage screening raised suspicions.

A physical search of the luggage revealed large amounts of cash carefully hidden inside footwear.

Authorities said the money was not declared upon arrival, leading customs officers to seize the full amount.

Ongoing investigation

Officials continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the attempted movement of the funds, including possible links to wider financial or criminal activity.
