Albania’s Socialist Party leads in parliamentary vote, results show

Date:

Albanians headed to the polls on Sunday for parliamentary elections, with results to be announced on Tuesday, according to the head of the Electoral Commission, Ilirjan Celibashi.

Prime Minister Edi Rama’s Socialist Party (PS), which has governed since 2013, took a strong lead in Albania’s parliamentary election against former Prime Minister Sali Berisha of the Democratic Party (PD), securing 52.85% of the vote with 29% of the ballots counted, state election commission results showed on Monday. However, Rama may still need the support of smaller parties to maintain a majority in parliament.

Rama is seeking a fourth term, following a campaign dominated by promises of European Union accession and mutual accusations of corruption.
