The Larnaca-Dhekelia road has officially reopened to traffic following the completion of a €14.8 million project aimed at upgrading safety, accessibility and the development potential of the area.
The third phase of the long-awaited project, which had been pending for 26 years, was delivered to the public, with authorities describing it as a major improvement for the wider Larnaca region.
Four-lane road with cycling and pedestrian facilities
The main road network extends for approximately 3.25 kilometres, while the secondary service road network covers around 4.5 kilometres.
The project includes four traffic lanes, two in each direction, a central raised divider, modern pavements, cycling lanes, green areas, bus stops, roadside parking spaces and four roundabouts.
A total of 22 pelican-type pedestrian crossings with traffic lights were also installed to improve pedestrian safety.
Additional works to continue until October
The secondary road network includes one or two traffic lanes, paved pavements, parking areas and zebra-type pedestrian crossings. Most connections with the main road network have been built as raised junctions.
The total cost of the project reached €14.838 million plus VAT.
Construction began on 30 September 2022 and was originally scheduled for completion on 17 March 2025. Following a revised contract deadline, the project was completed on 16 July 2026.
Authorities highlight economic and tourism benefits
Larnaca District Engineer of the Public Works Department and project engineer Lazaros Lazarou said the entire main road, measuring around 3.3 kilometres, was delivered on 24 July and ends at the roundabout leading towards Pyla.
He added that the remaining service roads, which were not included in the original contracts, will now be constructed following changes to the project and are expected to be completed by the end of October. Landscaping works are also expected to begin during the same period.
Mr Lazarou said the delays were justified and confirmed that there are no contractual issues with the contractor.
He described the project as particularly important for Larnaca, saying it will contribute to regional development, new investments and improved public safety. He also highlighted the cycling lanes as a key element, noting that cycling infrastructure is a defining feature of modern European cities.
Business and tourism sectors welcome development
Larnaca Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Nakis Antoniou described the reopening as a significant development, saying that after many years the Larnaca-Dhekelia road had finally been delivered for public use.
He noted, however, that the project is not yet fully complete, as the remaining service roads still need to be finished.
Larnaca Tourism Development and Promotion Company President Dinos Lefkaritis said the road was delivered after a significant delay and expressed hope that the landscaping works would soon be completed.
He added that the development strengthens Larnaca’s tourism area, highlighting the city’s continued growth and increased tourist activity despite international challenges.
