More and more electric scooters are appearing on city streets, offering a quick and convenient solution for everyday travel. However, their reckless use is raising concerns and increasing the risks faced not only by users themselves, but also by pedestrians and drivers.
Scooters travelling at high speeds among pedestrians, violations of traffic regulations, sudden changes of direction and their use in areas where they are not permitted are becoming increasingly common sights.
Concerns over the reckless use of electric scooters have been highlighted in a social media post by Giorgos Solomou, who recorded footage from Makariou Avenue in Nicosia on Saturday night.
According to Solomou, people riding scooters are repeatedly travelling along the avenue at high speeds and even performing wheelies, sometimes wearing helmets and using lights and other times without them.
He expressed concern that, as he claims, the situation is continuing without any meaningful intervention, warning of the possibility of a serious accident whether involving a pedestrian, or even a child, being struck, or the scooter users themselves being injured.
At the same time, the tragic death of 16-year-old Aris Papacharalambous has once again brought the issue of road safety into sharp focus. The teenager was seriously injured in a traffic accident on August 7, when he was struck by a drunk driver while riding his electric scooter.
Against this backdrop, the incident captured in the video below has reignited the debate over road safety and the need for greater caution from everyone.
This applies both to electric scooter users, who are required to follow traffic rules, and to motorists, who must remain aware of the presence and vulnerability of scooter riders on the roads.
