Although a trilateral meeting between the UN Secretary-General, the President of the Republic and the Turkish Cypriot leader had not initially been scheduled in New York, “the Greek Cypriot leader proposed holding a meeting this week. However, at this stage, the Turkish Cypriot leader did not consider the proposal appropriate,” UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Cyprus María Ángela Holguín said.
In a message released on Sunday morning, Holguín also said that the UN has completed its record of the convergences, which will be made available to the sides once negotiations begin. The Personal Envoy added that she will continue her efforts until the end of December and will visit Cyprus in October.
“In New York, during the High-Level Week of the General Assembly, I met the two leaders separately and accompanied the Secretary-General during his bilateral meetings with each leader,” Holguín said in her message.
“Together with Rosemary DiCarlo, UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, we met the two negotiators with the intention of reviewing the Confidence-Building Measures that the two sides agreed to develop,” she continued.
She added that “these measures should contribute to building trust and pave the way for new initiatives.”
Holguín said that during his visit to Cyprus last July, the Secretary-General reiterated his commitment to continue supporting the sides in their search for a solution until the final day of his term, which ends in three months.
“In New York, the Secretary-General met each leader separately and exchanged views on how to overcome the challenges and enable them to move forward,” she noted.
She added that “although a trilateral meeting had not initially been scheduled, the Greek Cypriot leader proposed holding a meeting this week. However, at this stage, the Turkish Cypriot leader did not consider the proposal appropriate.”
“In this context, regarding the Confidence-Building Measures agreed by the two sides, the Secretary-General reiterated the urgent need for the leaders to move forward with their implementation as a reflection of their ability to cooperate,” the Personal Envoy continued.
“Such cooperation, if achieved, would demonstrate their willingness to begin a process towards a sustainable solution,” Holguín stressed.
She also noted that the UN has completed its record of the convergences, “which will be made available to the sides once negotiations begin.”
In addition, she said the UN will invite both sides to present their proposals regarding the methodology.
“I will continue my efforts to facilitate the process until the end of December and, in October, during my next visit to Cyprus, I will continue encouraging both sides to create the appropriate environment required for the launch of a new process,” Holguín concluded.
