The United States armed forces have announced that they “disabled” a tanker vessel by striking its engine room in order to prevent it from reaching Iran’s Kharg Island, in what they described as a violation of Washington’s restrictions on Iranian ports.
The incident has been described as part of a wider enforcement of US sanctions policy in the region.
CENTCOM confirms action
According to a statement posted on X, the US Central Command said the operation targeted the M/T Lexie, a ballast tanker sailing under the flag of Botswana.
CENTCOM stated that the vessel ignored multiple warnings issued by US forces before being struck with a missile intended to immobilise it.
Vessel allegedly heading to Kharg Island
US authorities said the tanker was attempting to reach Iran’s Kharg Island, which is a key oil export hub, in breach of restrictions imposed by Washington on Iranian maritime operations.
The US said the action was taken to enforce the blockade and prevent the vessel from continuing its voyage.
Regional tensions remain high
The US tanker strike highlights ongoing tensions in the Gulf region, where maritime security incidents have increased amid broader geopolitical disputes involving Iran and Western powers.
Further details regarding the condition of the vessel or crew were not immediately provided.
