Khalilur Rahman of Bangladesh has been elected President of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly following a vote held at the UN headquarters.
According to the official results, Rahman secured 99 votes, while Cyprus’ candidate, Andreas Kakouris, received 91 votes.
A total of 190 member states were present and voted, with 96 votes required to secure election to the post.
Cyprus congratulates the winner
In a statement, the Cyprus Ministry of Foreign Affairs congratulated Rahman on his election. It reaffirmed the Republic’s commitment to strengthening multilateral cooperation and promoting the principles and values of the United Nations.
The ministry also thanked UN member states that supported the Cypriot candidacy for the Presidency of the 81st General Assembly.
Praise for Cyprus candidate
In a post on X, the ministry expressed special appreciation to Andreas Kakouris for presenting what it described as a clear vision for a presidency dedicated to practical multilateralism.
According to the statement, Kakouris advocated an approach aimed at rebuilding trust, enhancing effectiveness and ensuring that the United Nations serves the interests of all member states.
The ministry noted that he promoted this vision extensively during recent months as part of Cyprus’ campaign for the position.
Commitment to multilateral cooperation
Congratulating Rahman, the ministry said it looked forward to a presidency committed to the principles of multilateralism, impartiality and collective action for the benefit of all member states.
It added that Cyprus would continue working actively, consistently and responsibly to strengthen multilateral cooperation and advance the principles and values of the United Nations.
The statement reaffirmed Cyprus’ commitment to effective multilateralism with the UN at its centre.
