On September 5, 1976, Jim Henson’s The Muppet Show premiered on television, bringing Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo and a host of other beloved characters to audiences around the world.
The series debuted in the UK on ITV, with the first episode featuring actor and comedian Joel Grey as the guest star. The programme was subsequently broadcast in first-run syndication in the United States.
From rejected pilots to television success
The road to The Muppet Show was not straightforward. Henson had produced two pilot programmes for ABC in 1974 and 1975, but neither was developed into a regular series.
British producer Lew Grade eventually backed the project, leading to the production of the series in the UK. Episodes were filmed at ATV Elstree Studios in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire.
A revolutionary variety show
Combining puppetry, sketch comedy, music and celebrity appearances, The Muppet Show offered a distinctive take on the traditional variety programme.
Each episode centred on Kermit attempting to keep the chaotic Muppet Theatre production under control, while characters such as Fozzie Bear, Gonzo, Miss Piggy and the heckling duo Statler and Waldorf created plenty of trouble.
The format quickly became a hit, eventually running for five seasons and 120 episodes between 1976 and 1981.
A note about Mia Farrow
Mia Farrow was indeed connected to the early history of The Muppet Show, but she was not the guest star of the series premiere.
Farrow appeared in The Muppets Valentine Show, a pilot that aired in 1974. The first regular The Muppet Show episode in September 1976 instead featured Joel Grey in the UK, while the first US syndicated broadcasts used different episode orders, including Rita Moreno in New York.
A lasting legacy
What began as an unconventional television experiment became one of Jim Henson’s most enduring creations. The Muppet Show helped establish its characters as international cultural icons and became known for bringing major film, television and music stars into the world of Muppet comedy.
The series remains celebrated for its combination of humour, music and imaginative puppetry, with Disney describing it as a groundbreaking twist on the classic variety-show format.
