Saudis must recognise Israel for nuclear deal, says Trump

Date:

US President Donald Trump has said the proposed civil nuclear agreement between the United States and Saudi Arabia will only move forward if Riyadh joins the Abraham Accords, requiring the kingdom to recognise the State of Israel.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the agreement would be approved only under that condition.

“The Civil Nuclear Deal (There will be no enrichment of material!)… which pertains only to non-military use… will be approved, but is totally subject to Saudi Arabia joining the very respected and successful Abraham Accords,” he wrote.

Nuclear deal faces scrutiny

Trump’s comments come after experts raised concerns that the landmark agreement could increase the long-term risk of nuclear proliferation in an already volatile Middle East.

The issue of nuclear technology has remained at the centre of recent tensions involving the United States, Israel and Iran.

Trump stressed that the proposed agreement would be limited to peaceful civilian purposes and would not permit uranium enrichment.

Abraham Accords remain central

The Abraham Accords are a set of agreements that established diplomatic normalization between Israel and several Arab states, beginning with the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain.  Announced in August and September 2020 and signed in Washington, D.C. on September 15, 2020, the Accords were mediated by the United States under President Donald Trump.

The Abraham Accords were brokered by Trump in 2020, leading to the historic normalisation of diplomatic relations between Israel and the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain.

Since then, Sudan and Morocco have also established normalised relations with Israel.

Saudi Arabia has not yet joined the accords, despite years of diplomatic efforts and speculation over a possible breakthrough.
