“Τhe Secretary General will convene the two Cypriot leaders and the guarantor powers of Greece, Turkey and the United Kingdom for an informal meeting on Cyprus at the UN office in Geneva. That will take place from the 17th to the 18th of March,” the UN Secretary General’s Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said on Wednesday, during the daily press briefing in New York.
“This meeting is being held in the context of the Secretary General’s good offices efforts on the Cyprus issue and in line with his commitments from October 15, 2024” he added, pointing out that “the United Nations remains committed to supporting the Cypriot leaders and all Cypriots.”
Furthermore, he said that the informal meeting will provide an opportunity for meaningful discussion on the way forward on the Cyprus issue.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results due to Turkish intransigence. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
