Surveillance flights over Eastern Mediterranean
A Turkish Navy ATR 72-600 TMPA maritime patrol aircraft carried out intense surveillance activity in the Eastern Mediterranean in recent days, according to monitoring data cited by itamilradar.
The aircraft reportedly conducted repeated missions south of Turkey, east of Crete and west of Cyprus, remaining in international airspace based on available flight data.
Patrol patterns near Cyprus and Crete
The flights included extended patrol patterns and circular surveillance movements in areas of high strategic importance, close to Greek and Cypriot airspace.
The activity came amid heightened regional tensions linked to the movement of the Gaza-bound flotilla intercepted by Israeli armed forces.
According to the reported flight paths, the missions appeared focused on maritime monitoring and intelligence gathering rather than routine transit operations.

Turkey signals continued monitoring
The ATR 72-600 TMPA is one of Turkey’s main maritime patrol and anti-submarine warfare aircraft. However, flight traces recorded during May indicate activity more consistent with surveillance and intelligence missions.
Although no violation of national airspace was recorded, the frequency and intensity of the missions are being interpreted as a signal towards Athens and Nicosia during a period of increased regional military activity.
According to the Turkish interpretation, the operations demonstrate continuous monitoring of the so-called “Blue Homeland” area against potential external threats on a 24-hour basis.
