Turkey-Greece: new Athens-Istanbul air route

Date:

Athens and Istanbul have moved closer with the inauguration of a new air route by the fourth airline to link the two countries, reflecting increased tourism and trade between Greece and Turkey as a result of improving bilateral relations.

On the morning of Tuesday, 12 November, Sky Express’s first flight landed at Istanbul’s main airport on the European coast, where officials from the Greek Consulate in Istanbul, airport executives, and representatives from the Turkish tourism organisation “Go Turkiye” welcomed the first passengers. Among them were Sky Express founder and CEO Yiannis Grylos, along with other company officials.

During the opening ceremony, Mr Grylos stated that flights from Athens to Istanbul would be daily, adding, “We are already considering increasing the frequency of this route and looking to open additional Greek destinations to Turkey,” especially to the Greek islands, given the airline’s extensive domestic network. “This will improve relations between the two countries and allow for even better communication between the two states,” he said.

For his part, the CEO of Istanbul Airport (IGA Istanbul Airport) highlighted that the Greek airline, which has reached five million passengers this year, is the 110th airline now landing at this airport, needing only two more airlines to become the world’s busiest.
