Legal proceedings have been launched in Cyprus and abroad to identify the individuals behind anonymous X accounts accused of repeatedly targeting a prominent Cypriot businessman with false, defamatory and damaging claims.
Legal action under way
According to a statement from the businessman’s legal team, proceedings are under way in Cyprus and overseas to establish the identities of those who created, managed or coordinated the accounts.
The legal process is focused on securing the preservation and lawful disclosure of information that could lead to the identification of those responsible for the anonymous X accounts.
No names disclosed at this stage
The businessman and his legal team said they will not, at this stage, disclose the names of the accounts, suspected individuals, evidence or technical details.
They added that any information obtained during the investigation will first be verified through the appropriate legal and forensic procedures before being made public.
Questions over anonymity and accountability
According to the legal team, while X allows users to remain anonymous, this can in some cases be exploited to carry out malicious attacks against individuals’ reputations.
They argued that when anonymous X accounts are used to spread false claims and cause serious reputational harm, anonymity should not provide permanent protection from legal accountability.
The statement added that such anonymity may be lifted through the appropriate legal procedures, allowing those responsible to be identified and held accountable.
The legal team also said questions surrounding the responsibilities of online platforms under the European Union’s Digital Services Act (DSA) are being examined as part of the legal process.
Further announcements will be made as the legal proceedings progress.
