A 44-year-old Special Constable has been suspended after testing positive for alcohol following a three-vehicle collision in Nicosia, Cyprus Police announced on Friday.
The suspension was ordered by Acting Chief of Police Panikos Stavrou.
The officer is now the subject of both a criminal and disciplinary investigation.
Three vehicles involved in collision
The crash occurred at around 8 am on Thursday at the Nicosia General Hospital roundabout.
According to police, the 44-year-old officer, who was off duty at the time, was driving a car that collided with a vehicle driven by a 43-year-old woman under circumstances that remain under investigation.
The impact pushed the woman’s vehicle into a third car driven by a 38-year-old man.
Two cars destroyed by fire
Following the collision, the vehicles driven by the officer and the woman caught fire and were completely destroyed.
The third vehicle sustained damage to its rear.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze, while all three drivers were taken by ambulance to Nicosia General Hospital, where they received first aid.
Positive alcohol test
Breathalyser tests were carried out on all three drivers.
The police officer on duty recorded a final reading of 59μg of alcohol, above the legal limit of 22μg.
Further checks also found that he was driving without a valid insurance certificate.
Police confirmed that both criminal and disciplinary proceedings remain ongoing.
