Donald Trump posted a controversial image of himself holding a rifle alongside the message “No more Mr Nice Guy!” on social media.
In a separate post, Trump warned that Iran must “get smart soon” and accused Tehran of failing to agree on a non-nuclear deal.
Trump’s threat to Iran comes as negotiations between Washington and Tehran have reached a deadlock after weeks of conflict. A planned new round of peace talks has reportedly been cancelled, underscoring the diplomatic impasse.
Despite an uneasy ceasefire, tensions remain high following the escalation triggered by US and Israeli strikes in late February.
Strait of Hormuz central to tensions
The US President also claimed that Iran had signalled a willingness to reopen the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant share of global oil supplies passes.
Iran previously blockaded the waterway in response to military strikes, contributing to rising global energy prices and economic uncertainty.
King Charles visit adds political dimension
During a White House event, Trump suggested that King Charles III agreed with his stance that Iran must never acquire nuclear weapons.
A spokesperson for Buckingham Palace responded cautiously, noting the UK’s long-standing position on preventing nuclear proliferation.
Criticism and political pressure
The threat has drawn scrutiny both domestically and internationally, with critics warning that rhetoric and imagery risk further inflaming an already volatile situation.
Trump also criticised German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, accusing him of being soft on Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
While the US administration maintains it is under no immediate time pressure to reach a deal, analysts warn that prolonged tensions could deepen instability in the region.
The threat highlights the widening gap between the two sides, as diplomatic efforts struggle to deliver a breakthrough.
