An orange weather warning for severe thunderstorms and hail will take effect across Cyprus at 15:00 today, Wednesday, 14 October, four hours earlier than originally announced by the Department of Meteorology.
The Cyprus storm warning had initially been scheduled to begin at 19:00, but authorities have brought forward its start time.
Following the warning, Civil Defence has issued a series of recommendations to help residents protect themselves and their properties from heavy rainfall, flooding, strong winds, and tornadoes.
The public is being urged to take preventive measures to minimise the risks and potential damage caused by severe weather.
How to protect your property from flooding
Civil Defence advises residents to check that drains outside their homes and workplaces are not blocked and that gutters and drainage systems are functioning properly.
Those with basements in flood-prone areas should take additional precautions, including installing automatic water pumps and moving valuables or expensive equipment to safer locations.
Residents are also advised to secure objects that could be swept away by floodwaters, such as water tanks and water heaters.
In vulnerable areas, sandbags should be prepared to help prevent water from entering homes and other premises.
During heavy rainfall, people are encouraged to limit their movements and avoid working or remaining in underground spaces.
What to do during a flood
Civil Defence strongly advises against crossing flooded roads, whether on foot or by car, motorcycle, or bicycle.
Drivers who encounter a flooded road should stop and turn back rather than attempting to cross.
If a vehicle becomes stranded in floodwater, occupants are advised to abandon it because of the risk of the vehicle flooding or being swept away.
People inside buildings should leave basements and move to a safe, elevated location.
The public is also warned to stay away from electrical cables and areas where landslides have occurred.
Dangers remain after floodwaters recede
Civil Defence warns that flooded areas may remain dangerous even after the water has subsided.
Road surfaces may have been damaged, slopes may be unstable or dangerous, and floodwater may be contaminated.
Residents are therefore advised to avoid affected areas until conditions are safe.
The recommendations come as the Cyprus storm warning is set to begin earlier than initially scheduled, with severe thunderstorms and hail expected.
