The Pentagon has instructed US Central Command to finalise preparations for possible renewed major combat operations against Iran, according to US officials. President Donald Trump has not made a final decision on whether or when to launch new strikes.
The directive reportedly does not set a specific date for military action. The preparations come as the Trump administration considers options for renewed operations in the coming weeks.
Possible strikes before midterm elections
US and Israeli officials have said military action could potentially take place before the US midterm elections in November, although no final decision has been made.
Potential operations are expected to focus on Iranian nuclear facilities, energy infrastructure and other strategic targets, according to reports.
Trump holds talks with national security team
Trump’s national security team met at Camp David last week to discuss the war and US strategy towards Iran and the Houthi rebels in Yemen. Trump has also spoken with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu twice in recent days, according to Axios.
The developments come amid continued tensions over Iran’s nuclear programme. Reuters reported that the US is seeking a significant reduction in Iran’s enrichment capacity as part of efforts to reach a broader agreement.
Iran has also been preparing for a possible renewed US attack, with Iranian officials considering a broader military response if Washington resumes large-scale operations.
