China has confirmed an official visit by US President Donald Trump, with discussions expected to focus on Iran and ongoing trade tensions between the world’s two largest economies.
According to China’s Foreign Ministry, the Trump China visit will take place from 13 to 15 May following an invitation from Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Trade and Iran at the centre of talks
The Trump visit to China is expected to address both geopolitical and economic issues, including efforts to reduce tensions in the Middle East and manage the long-running trade dispute between Washington and Beijing.
US officials have indicated that Trump will seek to apply pressure on China regarding Iran, a key strategic ally of Tehran.
Symbolic and strategic importance
The White House described the visit as highly symbolic but also commercially focused, with expectations that the US president will aim to secure new trade agreements.
The visit marks Trump’s first trip to China since returning to office in January 2025.
His schedule includes a visit to the Temple of Heaven in Beijing and an official state dinner.
Focus on trade war and economic balance
US and Chinese officials are also expected to discuss extending the trade truce reached in late 2025 in South Korea.
The ongoing trade dispute, driven by tariffs and economic restrictions, remains a key source of tension between the two countries.
The Trump administration has signalled that it intends to rebalance trade relations and prioritise what it describes as “fairness and reciprocity” in economic ties.
Beyond trade, the Trump China visit is expected to include discussions on the conflict in the Middle East, where China maintains close ties with Iran.
Washington is seeking Beijing’s influence in regional diplomacy as part of efforts to stabilise the situation.
Future diplomatic exchanges planned
According to White House officials, Xi Jinping and his wife are expected to visit Washington later in 2026 as part of ongoing high-level diplomatic engagement between the two countries.
