Trump Jr. mocks Zelensky through a meme

Date:

A meme video reposted on Instagram by Donald Trump Jr., the eldest son of US President-elect Donald Trump, caused a stir on Sunday (10/11).

In the video, there’s an image showing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky looking serious beside Trump, accompanied by text reading: “Viewpoint: You’re 38 days away from losing your allowance,” suggesting the potential cessation of US financial support in Ukraine’s war with Russia, as reported by ERT. The meme was originally shared by former Alaska governor Sarah Palin and then reposted by Donald Trump Jr.

The “38 days” most likely refer to 17 December, when US electors will meet to vote for the president and vice president based on the 5 November election results.

Reuters: The Next Four to Five Months Are Critical for the War in Ukraine

Meanwhile, Reuters, citing a Ukrainian official, reports that the next four to five months will be crucial for the course of the war in Ukraine. Against the backdrop of Donald Trump’s win in the US presidential election, Kyiv hopes for an end to the conflict.

“The next four to five months will be critical… Trump’s return to the White House puts the focus on Kyiv as a possible end to the war,” the Reuters article states.

Trump, who will be inaugurated as US President on 20 January, has stated that he will end the war swiftly but has not clarified how he intends to accomplish this.

“This winter is critical… I hope the war is nearing its end. Right now, we are establishing positions on both sides for negotiations, our starting points,” an official told Reuters.

Officials are waiting to see whom Trump will select for top security and defence positions to get an idea of how he may shape his Ukraine policy. For now, Trump has ruled out former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who is seen as pro-Ukraine by the Zelensky administration.

NATO Invitation to Ukraine Now “Less Likely”

A Kyiv official told Reuters that following Trump’s win, an invitation to join NATO now seems “less likely.” He acknowledged the risk that Trump could reduce aid. “I hope the Biden administration will try to avoid this risk (for us),” the official added.

The Kremlin said on Friday (08/11) that Vladimir Putin is ready to discuss Ukraine with Trump, though this doesn’t mean Moscow’s demands have shifted.

In June, Putin outlined his conditions for ending the war: Ukraine would have to abandon its NATO ambitions and withdraw its forces from the entirety of four regions claimed by Russia, which Kyiv views as tantamount to surrender.
