Police Chief Themistos Arnaoutis has ordered an investigation into the circumstances under which a 17-year-old detainee escaped from Omorfita Police Station. Procedures have also been initiated to place a police officer on suspension pending an investigation into possible disciplinary responsibilities.
According to a police statement, Arnaoutis reviewed the incident report submitted to him and appointed an investigating officer to examine a potential disciplinary case against a member of the force.
At the same time, instructions were issued for the officer concerned to be placed on suspension while the investigation is ongoing.
The 17-year-old was being held in connection with a theft investigation when he escaped from Omorfita Police Station late on Thursday afternoon.
Following the escape, police launched a large-scale operation to locate the teenager, deploying increased patrols across Nicosia. The Police Crisis Management Centre was also activated to coordinate the search effort.
According to the statement, the 17-year-old was arrested a few hours later under a court warrant at a police station in Nicosia.
