Summer temperatures amid yellow thunderstorm warning

Date:

Cyprus weather will remain warm on Wednesday, with temperatures expected to reach around 35C inland. However, the heat will be accompanied by afternoon instability, bringing the risk of isolated showers and thunderstorms.

According to the Meteorological Service, cloud development from midday onwards could trigger isolated rain and thunderstorms, mainly over mountainous and inland areas. Hail is also possible in locations affected by storms.

A similar weather pattern is expected to continue over the coming days.

Afternoon thunderstorms expected

A weak low-pressure system is affecting the region.

Following the dissipation of early morning low cloud and patchy mist or fog, conditions across most parts of the island will become mainly fine with periods of increased cloud cover.

From around midday, developing clouds are expected to produce isolated showers and thunderstorms, particularly over the mountains and inland areas. Hail may occur during stronger thunderstorms.

Winds will initially be variable and light at around 3 Beaufort before becoming mainly south-westerly to north-westerly at 3 to 4 Beaufort. In south-eastern areas, winds may temporarily strengthen to 4 to 5 Beaufort.

The sea will be calm to slightly rough.

Temperatures will rise to around 35C inland, 27C along the west coast, 29C on the remaining coastal areas and 25C in the higher mountains.

Mist and low cloud overnight

Tonight, conditions will remain mostly clear, although increasing low cloud is expected, especially along coastal areas.

Later in the night and during the early morning hours, patchy mist or fog may form, mainly in eastern and inland areas.

Temperatures will fall to around 20C inland and along the coast, and to 16C in the higher mountains.

Unsettled pattern to continue

On Thursday, Friday and Saturday, low cloud and local fog are expected during the morning before giving way to mainly sunny conditions with intervals of cloud.

During the afternoon, cloud build-up is expected to bring isolated showers and thunderstorms, mainly in mountainous and inland areas. On Saturday, eastern parts of the island may also be affected.

Hail remains possible in areas experiencing thunderstorms.

The Meteorological Service said temperatures are not expected to change significantly through Saturday, remaining close to or slightly above seasonal averages.
