A train collision has left four people in critical condition and 17 injured after two passenger trains collided in the north of Denmark.
The train collision occurred this morning between Hillerød and Kagerup, approximately 40 kilometres north of Copenhagen, according to police and emergency services.
Emergency response at the scene
Authorities confirmed that emergency crews responded immediately after receiving the alert at around 06:30 local time.
Police described the incident as a serious rail accident, adding that both trains were involved in a head-on collision.
Emergency services confirmed that all passengers were evacuated from the trains and no one was left trapped.
Injured passengers were transported to the hospital by ambulance and helicopter, according to fire services and emergency responders.
Officials said four people remain in critical condition following the train collision, while a total of 17 individuals were injured.
The extent of the injuries varies, with hospitals continuing to assess and treat those affected.
Investigation underway
Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the collision. Police and emergency teams remain at the site, where the damaged trains are still positioned in a forested area.
Images from Danish broadcaster DR show significant damage to the front sections of both trains.
Train accidents are relatively rare in Denmark, although previous incidents have resulted in fatalities and injuries in recent years.
The latest train collision in Denmark has renewed attention on rail safety in the country as investigations continue.
