British Bases Police in the western area of Cyprus made 26 arrests during the past week, including three on August 16 in cases involving drugs and illegal residence on the island following a vehicle check.
During a search of the vehicle, officers found “items and equipment associated with drug use”. The driver was also tested and returned a positive result for crystal methamphetamine.
The two passengers were found to be illegally residing on the island and were arrested.
During the same period, a woman was remanded in custody by court order following her arrest for possession of drugs with intent to supply them to others.
Police carried out checks across the area
According to statistics, British Bases Police also issued 30 fixed penalty notices and gave 47 written warnings.
Officers carried out 30 alcohol tests and three drug tests during the week.
The Marine Police Unit maintained a strong presence in the area, conducting 25 boat patrols and checking 46 vessels and 158 people.
Tributes following Lady’s Mile tragedy
Despite the successful outcome of police operations during a particularly busy three-day holiday weekend, Assistant Police Commander Melina Papagregoriou expressed her condolences following the death of a man at Lady’s Mile beach on August 15.
She said the holiday weekend had also been marked by the tragic incident, during which the Marine Police Unit responded to an emergency involving two people in the sea.
“Both individuals were recovered by our officers and received immediate first aid, with the assistance of emergency medical services. Sadly, despite the efforts of everyone involved, one of the two people lost his life,” she said.
Papagregoriou stressed the importance of exercising particular caution at sea, especially during the busy summer period, and extended her condolences to the victim’s family and friends.
Police stress prevention and enforcement
Looking ahead to the rest of the summer, Papagregoriou said the priority of the SBA police remains both prevention and law enforcement.
“We want people to safely enjoy the summer period and our beaches, but we will continue to take strict action where offences are identified,” she said.
