Members of the House of Representatives of Cyprus, along with the Speaker of Parliament and religious representatives, are among the highest-paid state officials, receiving a combination of basic salary, allowances and pension contributions.
According to data from the General Accounting Office, the Speaker of Parliament receives a gross monthly salary of €8,715, excluding allowances.
With allowances included, the total rises to €11,456, while deductions for pension/benefit schemes and taxation reduce the net monthly salary to approximately €7,461.
MPs and religious representatives pay
Members of Parliament and religious representatives receive a gross monthly salary of €7,911.
After deductions, including a 3% contribution to the pension/benefit scheme, the net monthly salary is approximately €5,466.
On an annual basis, the gross salary without allowances stands at €56,310.
When allowances and the 13-month calculation are included, the total gross annual salary reaches €99,612.
Allowances and additional benefits
The salary package includes several allowances:
- Representation allowance: €20,503
- Cost-of-living allowance adjustment: €5,804
- Secretariat services allowance: €12,302
- Travel allowance: €7,791
Total annual deductions before income tax amount to €11,944, while the net annual salary after income tax is €68,684.
Salary debate returns after elections
The issue of MPs’ and religious representatives’ remuneration has returned to public debate following the recent parliamentary elections and the formation of the new legislature.
The Constitution provides that outgoing MPs stop receiving salaries upon the swearing-in of new members, at which point payments to newly elected MPs begin.
