The formation of the new House of Representatives has triggered behind-the-scenes political negotiations over the election of its next Speaker.
Parties are currently calculating their parliamentary strength and exploring possible alliances that could secure either 29 votes in the first round or a majority in a second-round vote.
DISY–DIKO cooperation scenario gains attention
Attention is increasingly focused on potential cooperation between DISY and DIKO, with discussions reportedly centred on which figure could lead a possible alliance.
Names including Annita Demetriou and Nikolas Papadopoulos are said to be under consideration for the top parliamentary post.
If the two parties join forces, they would secure around 25 seats, with attention also turning to the stance of ELAM, which has stated it will field its own candidate in the first round.
Party strategies take shape across the spectrum
According to reports, a recent DISY leadership meeting included an initial assessment of the election result, with support reportedly expressed for Annita Demetriou as a potential candidate for the Speaker of the House.
At the same time, other political forces including AKEL, ALMA and Direct Democracy are also shaping their next moves.
ALMA leader Odysseas Michaelides did not rule out cooperation with AKEL, stating that the movement will not present its own candidate.
A possible AKEL–ALMA cooperation could secure around 19 votes, limiting their prospects of securing the position, while the role of Direct Democracy remains unclear.
New parliamentary balance set to reshape politics
The election of the House Speaker will take place during the first session of the newly elected Parliament on 4 June.
The outcome of the vote is also expected to present challenges for the government, as it will have to cooperate with a newly formed legislature that excludes two coalition parties, DIPA and EDEK.
At the same time, changes are also expected in the composition of the National Council, with new members replacing outgoing representatives.
