A total of 278 listed or architecturally significant properties in Larnaca district are to undergo further examination after being identified during inspections of potentially dangerous buildings.
The Larnaca District Local Government Organisation (EOA) said it is seeking the “immediate cooperation and response” of the Cultural Heritage Preservation Branch of the Department of Town Planning and Housing after finding that a large number of potentially unsafe properties in the district have protected or architecturally significant status.
278 properties identified during inspections
As part of its responsibilities, the Larnaca EOA has been recording, assessing and managing dangerous buildings across the district under a comprehensive action plan focused primarily on protecting public safety.
During these inspections, 278 buildings were identified as requiring further examination.
The organisation said it recognised the need to protect both human life and property while also safeguarding the district’s architectural and cultural heritage.
It has therefore written to the director of the Department of Town Planning and Housing, providing details of the properties concerned.
Priority requested for applications
The Larnaca EOA has asked to be informed which of the 278 properties are already subject to applications seeking consent for work and which have received the necessary approval for work to begin.
It also stressed that applications involving these potentially dangerous buildings should be examined as a priority so that the necessary measures can proceed.
The organisation said it expects the relevant department to cooperate and respond promptly, allowing the cases to be prioritised and appropriate solutions pursued where necessary.
Public safety remains top priority
The Larnaca EOA said protecting human life and public safety remains its highest priority.
It will continue implementing its management plan, strengthening inspections and working with all relevant authorities to address dangerous buildings across the district.
