Christodoulides calls for full Schengen accession after Costa meeting

Date:

The European Union is ready to contribute positively to efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem, including by strengthening EU-Turkey relations, European Council President Antonio Costa said on Friday.

Speaking at a joint press conference with President Nikos Christodoulides in Nicosia, Costa stressed that “a united Europe needs a reunited Cyprus” and expressed support for UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ efforts to promote a solution through dialogue.

He said the EU is ready to help and play a positive role, including through stronger bilateral relations with Turkey.

Christodoulides calls for talks to resume

President Christodoulides said the EU can play “the most decisive role” in resolving the Cyprus problem because it has the necessary tools.

Where differences remain, he said, “the solution is the European acquis”.

Christodoulides reiterated his readiness for the talks to resume and sent a message to the UN Secretary-General on the need for an expanded conference.

He said such a conference should announce the resumption of negotiations from where they left off, stressing that the negotiating table would ultimately demonstrate the political will of all sides.

Schengen membership and EU priorities

During the meeting, Christodoulides also raised the Republic of Cyprus’ desire for full membership of the Schengen Area.

The discussions covered the EU’s new Multiannual Financial Framework, Ukraine, enlargement, competitiveness, defence and security, and migration.

The situation in the Middle East was also discussed, with Christodoulides highlighting Cyprus’ role and its willingness to support efforts to strengthen EU relations with the wider region.

Costa thanked Cyprus for its contribution and role in the region.
