‘No to the antennas of death’: Protest march outside British Bases

Date:

The Kourion Municipality held a peaceful protest march outside the British Sovereign Base Area of Akrotiri today, opposing British plans to install new military antennas in the area.

The demonstration was supported by the Akrotiri Merra Committee, the “Akrotiri Ora Miden” movement, organised groups and members of the public.

The march began at 9:30 a.m. from the first entrance to the Akrotiri municipal district.

Kourion Municipality expressed concerns over the potential impact of the project on health, safety and the environment, as well as what it described as the increasing militarisation of the Akrotiri peninsula.

The British Bases had said in a statement on Friday that the project concerns the modernisation of infrastructure in the Akrotiri Salt Lake area.

They assured that work would only begin after the completion of the required environmental procedures and a public consultation.

The British Bases also said they would continue cooperating with the relevant authorities and local communities.
