The Kourion Municipality is holding a peaceful protest march outside the British Sovereign Base Area of Akrotiri today, opposing plans to install new military antennas in the area.
The demonstration is supported by the Akrotiri Merra Committee, the “Akrotiri Ora Miden” movement, organised groups and members of the public.
The march is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. from the first entrance to the Akrotiri municipal district, followed by the delivery of a resolution to the British Bases.
Kourion Municipality has expressed concerns about the potential impact of the project on health, safety and the environment, as well as what it describes as the increasing militarisation of the Akrotiri peninsula.
For their part, the British Bases say the project concerns the modernisation of infrastructure in the Akrotiri Salt Lake area.
They have stated that construction work will only begin once the environmental assessment process has been completed and a public consultation has taken place.
The British Bases also said they will continue cooperating with the relevant authorities and local communities.
