Nicosia road closures expand around Costanza Bastion

Date:

New traffic restrictions from 4 June

The Nicosia Municipality has announced new road closures as redevelopment works in the Old City move into a new phase from Thursday, 4 June 2026.

The measures form part of the “Redevelopment of the Inner Moat Ring – Phase A” project, which includes streetscape improvements, infrastructure upgrades, and façade enhancement works around Costanza Bastion.

Additional roads to close

From 4 June, Construction Section A3, stretching from the “OHI” roundabout to the entrance of the municipal parking area at Costanza Bastion, will be closed to traffic.

The western section of Xanthis Xenierou Street will operate as a cul-de-sac, with two-way access from Areos Street restricted to residents.

The municipal parking area at Costanza Bastion will remain closed until the project’s completion, currently scheduled for mid-December 2026.

Meanwhile, Construction Section A2, covering the outbound lane from Thermopylon Street towards the “OHI” roundabout, will remain closed until the end of July 2026.

Construction Section A4, covering the eastern section of Constantine Palaiologos Avenue from Archbishop Makarios II Square to the entrance of the Costanza Bastion parking area, will also remain closed. Access will be limited to local residents and emergency vehicles.

Redevelopment works continue

The latest Nicosia road closures are linked to excavation works for the underground relocation of utility services, as well as the reconstruction of roads and pavements along Constantine Palaiologos Avenue.

At the same time, façade enhancement works on private buildings will continue in several sections of the project area.

Alternative routes for drivers

To ease congestion during the Nicosia road closures, motorists travelling from east to west towards the pedestrianised area are advised to use Stasinou Avenue, Doro Loizou Bridge, and Constantine Palaiologos Avenue via the “OHI” roundabout towards Eleftheria Square.

Drivers leaving the walled city towards Stasinou and Salaminos avenues should follow the route:

Lefkonos → Diogenous → Piraeus → Patriarchou Grigoriou → Agiou Antoniou.

Heavy goods vehicles will not be permitted to use Aeschylou and Hippocrates streets due to the closure of the outbound section of Constantine Palaiologos Avenue and the risk of vehicles becoming trapped on the narrow road network leading to Trikoupi Street.

The municipality has urged the public to follow all temporary traffic signs and thanked residents and motorists for their cooperation during the works.

The project is being implemented under the THALEIA 2021-2027 Cohesion Policy Programme and is co-funded by the European Union.
