The return of secondary school students brought traffic back to the roads of the capital on Monday, with significant congestion reported across Nicosia.
Around 41,000 students at 90 gymnasiums, lyceums and technical schools returned to their classrooms, significantly affecting traffic conditions. The situation is expected to become even more challenging from next Monday, when primary school pupils also return to school.
Alternative routes also affected
As reported on SIGMA’s “Protoselido” programme, drivers have been looking for alternative routes and side roads to avoid congestion. This has resulted in increased traffic even on roads that normally serve as alternative routes.
Similar traffic problems have also been reported in Limassol.
Police road safety campaign planned
Meanwhile, police are planning a road traffic enforcement campaign, with particular emphasis on motorcyclists and moped riders.
Drivers are being urged to exercise extra caution on the roads as traffic levels increase with the full return of students to schools.
