21 feeding stations installed for stray cats

The Municipality of Nicosia successfully launched a major animal welfare initiative, creating organised feeding points for the city’s stray cats. The action is implemented in collaboration with KOSMOS Insurance, the main sponsor supporting animal welfare and urban quality of life.

Mayor Charalambos Proutzos highlighted that the initiative reflects the city’s culture, sensitivity, and responsibility toward all forms of life. He emphasised that cats are an integral part of Nicosia’s identity and urban ecosystem, and their proper care protects public health while maintaining ecological balance.

Controlled feeding and volunteer involvement

As part of the initiative:

  • 21 feeding stations have been installed across all Nicosia districts
  • Two organised feeding points have been set up in Pedieos and Olympiados Park
  • A controlled and hygienic feeding system is operated with volunteer support

Volunteers play a key role in ensuring proper functioning of feeding points and the well-being of animals.

Corporate and community support

KOSMOS Insurance CEO Kyriakos Tyllis noted that how a society treats animals reflects its level of culture, stressing the company’s support for initiatives promoting respect and coexistence between humans and animals.

Maria Arkoudi, the initiative’s founder, demonstrated the correct use of feeding stations during the event, attended by local kindergarten children to cultivate early awareness of animal welfare.

The Mayor also highlighted the importance of sterilisation as a fundamental tool for responsible management of stray animal populations and encouraged citizen participation in these efforts.

Launch of “Nicosia Pet Friendly” page

The event also introduced “Nicosia Pet Friendly,” a modern information and awareness page covering responsible pet ownership, adoptions, lost and found animals, and city pet-friendly spaces and activities.

The Municipality aims to create a city that respects and protects animals, strengthening collaboration with citizens for a more humane and sustainable urban life, demonstrating the impact of cooperation between local authorities, private sector, and civil society.
